چکیده

In view of the present increased interest in the metabolism of the ciliate, Tetrahymena gdeii, an investigation of the relative activity of the anaerobic dehydrogenases which have a direct role in carbohydrate oxidation was undertaken as the first phase of a general survey of enzymatic activity in this organism. The presence in the ciliate of the dehydrogenases active in the tricarboxylic acid cycle was inferred from the results obtained in previous investigations. Chaix, Chauvet, and Fromageot (2) obtained slight increases in oxygen uptake if Tetrahymena was incubated with succinate and with citrate. A more conclusive demonstration of succinate oxidation by the organism was obtained by Seaman (3) and by Seaman and Houlihan (4); added citrate, however, was without effect. In these previous investigations no attempts were made to assay for maximal activity of the systems,

Enzyme Systems in Tetrahymena Geleii S

The rates of activity of the dehydrogenase systems in Tetrahymena, which are concerned with carbohydrate oxidation, in descending order of activity are: lactic > isocitric > succinic = glucose > glucose-6-phosphate = 6-phosphogluconic = malic > glutamic = cytochrome linked alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase. No evidence was obtained to indicate the presence of DPN linked alpha-glycerophosphat...

Utilization of acetate by Tetrahymena geleii (S).

Tetrahymena geleii (S) (Colpidium camp&m) is a ciliated protozoan which has been shown to be capable of synthesizing lipides from protein at an unusually high rate (1, 2). The next obvious step in studies concerned with the metabolism of this organism, therefore, seemed to be a search for the compound, or compounds, serving as precursor of the lipide material. Acetate is known to play a key r&e...

The role of aneurin in the nutrition of Tetrahymena geleii.

Recent studies of intermediary metabolism emphasize the indispensability of carboxylation-decarboxylation reactions in mediating changes in length of carbon chain in a number of key compounds of the metabolic pool (Ochoa, 1951). That aneurin is needed for at least one such reaction-the decarboxylation of pyruvate-can be inferred from the observations that aneurin-deficient organisms accumulate ...

The Effects of Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, and Pressure on Growth in Chilomonas Paramecium and Tetrahymena Geleii Furgason

1. The effects of O(2), CO(2), and pressure were studied in two very different species of protozoa, a flagellate, Chilomonas paramecium, grown in acetate-ammonium solution and a ciliate, Tetrahymena geleii, grown in 2 per cent proteose-peptone solution. 2. Chilomonas and Tetrahymena live and reproduce in solutions exposed to a wide range of O(2) concentrations, but Chilomonas is killed at high ...

Comparative amino acid metabolism of Tetrahymena geleii.

The ciliated protozoan, Tetrahymena geleii, is known to be similar to higher animals in its nutritional requirements. Thus it may utilize glycogen, starch, and galactose, as well as glucose and sucrose for its carbohydrate supply (1). In addition, it requires for optimal growth very nearly all of the B vitamins known at present and all of the amino acids essential to mammalian growth and mainte...
